About Vinécole
and Master of Wine Matthew Stubbs
Matthew Stubbs MW
Matthew left university with a language and business degree and now has over 33 years experience in the wine trade. He passed the Master of Wine exam in 1996 achieving the Bollinger Medal for the best tasting paper and the Listel Scholarship for the best Vinification paper. He has been actively involved with the Institute ever since, either as Practical Examiner, seminar lecturer or mentor. He is currently one of 417 people in the world to hold this prestigious qualification.
Matthew has worked in all aspects of the wine trade : importer, distributor and retailer, and was for 3 years Head of Wine for Safeway one of the UK’s biggest supermarket chains.
Since starting his own business in 2008 Matthew’s role has evolved. The majority of his time is spent teaching and sharing his vast knowledge of wine.
He has been a mentor for many MW students over the years and continues to help them fine tune the tasting skills needed to succeed in the Practical exam.
He equally enjoys teaching all Levels of WSET courses helping students gradually develop their knowledge of wine, whether they are already working in the wine industry or enthusiastic amateurs.
He is now a regular on judging panels for wine competitions, Panel Chair for the International Wine Challenge and co-President of the Sud de France Top 50 in China.
Matthew is also the current Practical Chair of the MW Education Committee.
In his spare time Matthew loves listening to music, going to gigs and he is also a long time season ticket holder at Norwich City Football Club. He is an accomplished musician and one day hopes to return to his passion for sailing.
